Elbow Beach Properties Redevelopment
An application received by the Department of Planning in May 2003
by Elbow Beach (EB) Properties was reviewed and it was concluded
that a meeting with the applicant would be beneficial. The main
environmental and historic building considerations that the Trust
wished to discuss was the impact upon a large area zoned Woodland,
an area of Woodland Reserve and a historic building known as Sandicote
which has been extensively altered over many years from its original
state. A delegation from the Bermuda National Trust met with representatives
of EB properties to discuss their proposed housing development on
the grounds of the Fritholme Estate, the large property northwest
of Elbow Beach Hotel.
The Trust was impressed with the degree of care shown
for the environmental impact of the project and the interest by
EB Properties in establishing a native and endemic nature trail
in the woodland areas currently prone to aggressive invasive species.
The Trust has also been offered the opportunity to examine Sandicote,
a non-listed building, by conducting both an architectural survey
and archaeological dig prior to its demolition. The Trust has offered
expertise in the development of the woodland areas as an endemic
and native forest and will share its findings upon conclusion of
the architectural and archaeological survey work, conducted in November/December
2003.
