National Trust – THE VERDMONT EXHIBIT - HOUSE AND ITS PEOPLE
Wednesday,
July 1st, 2009
Verdmont, a magnificent historic building operated
as a museum by the Bermuda National Trust, is important not
only for its architectural and man-made heritage but also
its social and cultural significance. Perched on Collector’s
Hill in Smiths, Verdmont has been witness to c300 years of
Bermuda’s history. The BNT is committed to telling the
full story of Verdmont - both currently and historically.
The exhibit will combine objects and panels to create a dynamic
display that provides historical record and insight for a
number of topics including: Her People (black and white),
The Community (Verdmont’s place in it), A Changing Landscape
(including archaeological evidence), Life at Verdmont (throughout
the ages), and Her Architecture. Verdmont, built c1710,
is unique for its unchanged footprint, featuring inspiring
architecture, cedar furniture and 300 year human history.
VERDMONT
- THE UNTOLD STORY by the Bermuda National Trust
Saturday,
July 25th, 2009
Recognising the need
to produce inclusive programming, the Bermuda National Trust
wishes to interpret this historic house through the eyes of
its former occupants, shifting the focus from architectural
to human heritage. We aim to tell inclusive stories
through a series of dramatic performances. The 300 year
history provides great scope to use the people of Verdmont
to present the diversity of responses to the social, economic
and political forces over time that have shaped our island
while demonstrating how both black and white, enslaved and
free, lived and worked together at this site. These
dramatic performances promise to enlighten and challenge the
audience while encouraging an appreciation of our diversity
and the history that connects us. Verdmont was built
c1710 and opened as a museum in 1957.

ART: A CULTURAL HISTORY
Wednesday,
September 9th, 2009 through January 1st, 2010
In celebration of Bermuda’s
400th anniversary, the Bermuda National Trust and the Bermuda
National Gallery have tailored a major exhibition that aims
to visually and thematically explore and present Bermuda’s
culture. The collection of arts will reflect Bermuda
both what it is today and its evolution since settlement.
By visually displaying historical and contemporary works side
by side, we hope to provide insight into Bermuda’s economic,
social and cultural development. The exhibition is a
collaboration between the Bermuda National Trust and the Bermuda
National Gallery, featuring fine art and decorative objects
from our extensive collections.
