Small
Gardens of St. George’s
A number of small gardens in the Town of St. George are maintained
by the Bermuda National Trust and may be glimpsed from the roadside
although the houses are not always open to the public.
The Old Rectory (open
on Wednesdays, Nov-Mar) has a small English-style cottage garden,
which can be glimpsed over the cedar gate at the end of Broad Alley.
The garden at Stewart
Hall, filled with fruit trees, herbs and old roses, can be seen
from Queen Street and Taylor’s Alley.
Bridge House gardens may
be accessed from Bridge Street or glimpsed from the brick walkway
to the State House.
There is a small formal
walled parterre garden on the upper side of Reeve Court
and an “edible garden” containing a variety of fruit
and herbs on the lower side. The house is not open to the public
but the gardens, accessible from the bricked walkway to the State
House, are continuously and freely open.
The small garden beside
the Globe Hotel, the site of the Bermuda National Trust Museum,
provides a shady place to rest after you have toured the gardens
of St. George’s.
Two small courtyard gardens
stand at the rear of Tucker House containing useful plants available
in Bermuda when Henry Tucker and his family lived there from 1775
to 1807. They include some fruit trees as well as herbs used in
medicine and cooking. Entry to the gardens is through the museum.
