A Fascinating Life: Dr Gabriele Humbert Parker – Educator, Artist, Author and Bermuda Internee
An illustrated Trust Talk with Horst Augustinovic
From her birth in Constantinople to her years as a German professor at Vassar College, and from wartime internment in Bermuda to a post-war explosion of artistic and literary work—Dr Gabriele Humbert Parker truly led a remarkable life.
This engaging presentation explores her early years, her letters to husband Harry during her 1940 internment, life among fellow internees at Huntly Towers and St George’s Barracks, and the vivid body of paintings—most now lost—that she left behind. Also featured are her public speeches to the 19th Century Club and the Bermuda Philosophical Society.
An Austrian-trained printer, Horst arrived in Bermuda in 1961 and never left. From launching the Bermuda Sun to leading Bermuda’s Stamp Design Advisory Committee, Horst has played a pivotal role in preserving the island’s history. A publisher, philatelist, and author of nine books—including The Golden Age of Bermuda Postcards and the free 750-page audio book Horst’s Bermuda – A Philatelic Obsession—Horst brings deep research and rich storytelling to this fascinating subject.
Books are available for purchase at Waterville and Horst will be signing copies after the talk.
