Trust Talk: The Journey from Enslavement to People’s Champion
An illustrated Trust Talk with Lorna Rainey
Tuesday, 24 June at 6:00 pm
Join us for a powerful in-person Trust Talk with Lorna Rainey, entrepreneur, author, historian, and trailblazer in talent representation. Ms Rainey is the great-granddaughter of Joseph Hayne Rainey, an American politician who was the first Black person to serve in the United States House of Representatives and the second Black person to serve in the United States Congress. She is on a mission to shine a light on her ancestor’s extraordinary life—from enslavement to statesman, including his time in Bermuda from 1862 to 1866, when he worked for a time as a barber out of Tucker House in St George’s, today a Bermuda National Trust museum and African Diaspora Heritage Trail Site.
A pioneer in the entertainment industry, Lorna Rainey founded The Talent Express in 1991, breaking racial barriers and advocating for diversity across radio, television, film, and print media. Her work helped pave the way for greater inclusion of minority talent in mainstream productions.
Ms Rainey will share insights from her recent book, First in the House, and discuss an upcoming film project honoring Congressman Rainey’s legacy.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the talk.
